Getting Set Up – My Development Environment Journey

As part of my Software Engineering learning journey, I have successfully completed the process of preparing my development environment.

My Setup Experience

The process involved installing and configuring Ubuntu Linux, setting up my terminal, making it my default terminal environment, and installing important software packages such as Vim, Git, Python 3, and pip.

Through these activities, I learned that preparing a development environment is one of the important steps in becoming a software engineer.

The Most Difficult Part

The most challenging part of the process was getting familiar with the terminal and understanding how different commands work.

Unlike graphical applications, where we can perform actions by clicking buttons, the terminal requires us to type commands correctly.

However, with continuous practice and exploration, I gradually became more comfortable using it.

What I Learned

One important lesson I learned is that software engineering is not just about writing code. It also involves understanding the tools and environments that make software development possible.

I learned how to navigate directories, install software packages, check their versions, and configure my terminal environment.

How Confident Am I Now?

Now that my terminal is ready, I feel more confident working with Linux and executing basic commands.

Although I still have many things to learn, I believe this practical exercise has given me a good foundation for the next stages of my software engineering journey.

I am excited to continue learning, practising, and improving my technical skills.

My development environment is ready, and so am I!

My Terminal Looks Right

As part of my Software Engineering learning journey, I have successfully configured Ubuntu as my default terminal environment.

What I Did

I configured my terminal settings to ensure that Ubuntu is my default terminal profile.

This means that whenever I launch my terminal application, Ubuntu will be the environment I work with without having to manually select it every time.

Why Is This Important?

Setting Ubuntu as my default terminal makes my development environment more convenient and consistent.

It saves time, reduces unnecessary steps, and allows me to focus more on writing code, executing commands, and managing my projects.

What I Learned

Through this practical exercise, I learned that setting up a development environment goes beyond installing software.

It also involves configuring the tools to work according to our needs and preferences.

I now understand why having a properly configured terminal is important for software engineers, especially when working with Linux commands and development tools.

My terminal is now properly configured, and I am becoming more comfortable using it as I continue my software engineering journey.

My Packages Are Installed

I have successfully installed and verified four important software packages in my Ubuntu terminal: Vim, Git, Python 3, and pip.

During this practical, I learned how to install software packages using the terminal and how to confirm that they were properly installed by checking their versions.

What Is a Software Package?

From my understanding, a software package is a collection of files, programs, and other necessary components put together to perform a particular function on a computer.

Instead of downloading and configuring every component of a program manually, we can use a package manager to install and manage software packages more easily.

The Packages I Installed:

  1. Vim: A text editor that allows me to create and edit files directly from the terminal.

  2. Git: A version control tool that helps developers track changes in their code and collaborate with other developers.

  3. Python 3: A programming language that allows developers to write programs, automate tasks, and build software applications.

  4. pip: A package manager for Python that allows developers to install and manage Python libraries and dependencies.

What I Learned:

Through this practical, I learned that installing development tools is one of the important steps in preparing a software engineering environment.

I also learned how to use the --version command to check whether a package is installed and identify its version.

This practical has helped me become more familiar with the Linux terminal and understand how different software packages contribute to the development process.

My packages are installed, verified, and ready for use as I continue my software engineering journey! 🚀

My Terminal Is Ready!

I have successfully installed and configured my terminal, and it is now ready for use.

For this practical, I used Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) to install Ubuntu on my Windows computer. This allows me to access a Linux environment directly from Windows without installing a separate operating system.

During the installation process, I learned how to set up a Linux environment, launch the Ubuntu terminal, and execute basic Linux commands.

I also learned that the terminal is an important tool for software engineers because it allows us to interact with the operating system, manage files and directories, install software, and execute programs using commands.

One of the challenges I encountered was understanding the initial setup process and the system requirements for running WSL, including virtualization.

After completing the installation, I tested my terminal by executing some basic commands to confirm that everything was working correctly.

What I Learned:

  1. How to install and configure a Linux terminal.

  2. How to access Ubuntu through WSL.

  3. How to execute basic Linux commands.

  4. The importance of the terminal in software engineering.

  5. How to troubleshoot basic installation and configuration issues.

This practical has helped me understand the importance of becoming comfortable with the command-line interface as an aspiring software engineer.

My terminal is installed, working, and ready for the next stage of my software engineering journey! 🚀

An Empire That Surprised Me: The Mali Empire

The Mali empire surprised me because of its remarkable contribution to education and scholarship. Before studying pre-colonial Africa, I did not know that Timbuktu became an important centre of learning, where scholars studied subjects such as law, mathematics, and astronomy.

What amazed me most was that its achievements went beyond wealth and trade. Books, manuscripts, and the exchange of knowledge were also important parts of its society.

For someone unfamiliar with this history, the Mali empire shows that Africa had thriving centres of intellectual life long before colonisation. Learning about it deepened my pride in Africa’s heritage and reminded me how much of our history deserves greater attention.

My Reflection on Africa Before Colonisation

I learned that Africa had rich and diverse civilisations before colonisation, with organised governments, trade networks, education, and cultural traditions. The Mali empire, for example, reminds me that African history includes achievement and scholarship, not only slavery and colonial rule.

I think this history was excluded from many people’s education partly because colonial narratives presented Africa as a continent without progress before Europeans arrived. These ideas continued to influence what schools taught.

Learning this strengthens my identity as an African. It gives me pride in our heritage and encourages me to study our past more deeply. It also reminds me that we can draw inspiration from our ancestors while building a better future.
